Philosophy of Science Research Group (HSE, Moscow) announces the academic seminar on philosophy of quantum physics. Gerardo S. Ciepielewski (post-doc at UNAM, Mexico) will present his talk «Local pilot-wave theory: a superdeterministic model». Gerardo’s co-speaker will be Louis Vervoort (Associate Professor at HSE, Moscow).
The seminar will take place on the 23rd of April at 18:00 (Moscow time, GMT+3), room A-407. The event’s language is English. For requesting access to the building please address Anastasia (aauman@hse.ru). Zoom link for online participation.
Abstract: "In this talk, I will introduce a local, superdeterministic model that denies the assumption of settings independence from Bell’s theorem, while still fully aligning with the predictions of quantum mechanics. This model is a modification of the pilot-wave theory. Differing from the traditional pilot-wave approach, which describes an N-particle system through its wave function and particle positions, the model posits a complete N-particle pilot-wave system at each point in space. Consequently, every point in physical space is characterized by internal degrees of freedom, represented by a wave function over an internal 'configuration space' and a distinct 'particle configuration'. The dynamics of the model are dictated by a Schrödinger equation for the wave function field, complemented by a guiding equation for the position field.
Our model provides a unique perspective to address and evaluate several longstanding criticisms aimed at superdeterminism. Critics have often argued that a superdeterministic theory would be impractically complex, excessively fine-tuned, or potentially detrimental to empirical science. This presentation will delve into how our model navigates these and other challenges."
The research from which this presentation was created was conducted in collaboration with Elias Okon from the Institute of Philosophical Research (IIF) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and Daniel Sudarsky from the Institute for Nuclear Sciences (ICN) at UNAM.
