The First HSE Semantics & Pragmatics Workshop was held on 30 September and 1 October 2016.

The First HSE Workshop on Semantics and Pragmatics took place on September 30 and October 1 in Moscow. The first HSE Semantics and Pragmatics workshop was held on September 30 and October 1 in Moscow. The workshop was organized by a Research group “Formal Philosophy”, School of Philosophy and School of Linguistics.

Philosophers, linguists and logicians from Russia, Europe and the United States discussed a broad range of topics both in the particular fields of formal semantics and formal pragmatics as well as a number of philosophical and transdisciplinary topics — epistemic foundations of semantics and pragmatics, semantics/pragmatics distinction, semantics/pragmatics interface and the relation between logic and linguistics. The workshop also included a poster session organized by graduate and undergraduate students from the HSE. The workshop has once again proven that collaboration between philosophers and scientists can be both fruitful and challenging. Philosophical theories sometimes crash and have to be repaired when applied to empirical cases, scientific models can be vulnerable when subtle philosophical distinctions are in play. The constant dialogue between specialists seems to be the most natural and effective way to get on with the rapidly evolving and specializing fields of formal semantics and pragmatics. The group “Formal philosophy” is now looking forward to seeing all of the participants and guests again at our new events.
