XIV Annual Conference of the School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies

The World/Worlds of the Future

The conference will be held on October 5-7, 2023 at the Faculty of Humanities of the Higher School of Economics, 21/4 Staraya Basmannaya str., Moscow

"The present is big with the future;
the future might be read in the past,
the distant is expressed in the near"
G.W. Leibniz

The main framework theme of the traditional conference of the HSE School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies in 2023 is "The World/Worlds of the Future". In the current period of geopolitical, economic and social instability, it is extremely important to raise and comprehend the question of the future that we can conceive, bring closer by our efforts or accept as inevitable. For philosophy, the question of the future and of the possible world/possible worlds, the outlines of which are guessed in it, is at the same time an epistemological, ontological and ethical question.

Within the framework of the conference, we plan to discuss the following issues that may be of interest to specialists in a variety of philosophical disciplines, from logic and the history of philosophy to the philosophy of science and social philosophy:

- How can the future become an object of adequate cognition? How justified are the predictive and prognostic abilities of our current scientific, including social, theories?

- How do our images of the world of the future – including the most utopian ones – become the driving force of decisions that we must and are ready to make in the present? How did such utopian projects function in the history of human thought – and what lessons can be learned from this?

- Can the unknown and sometimes unpredictable world of the future be a motive for moral decisions at all – and to what extent are we responsible today to those who will live tomorrow?

- Can we talk only about one world of the future, which is determined by physical, biological and mental laws underlying, among other things, social processes, or because of the fundamental undeterminacy of man, expressed in his freedom, the world of the future should be thought in terms of possible worlds, the realization of each of which is possible?

and other issues that can be proposed by the organizers of the sections and round tables.

The conference will be held in sections. A section can take several days and be divided into subsections. From 7 to 20 reports are expected in each section.

Planned sections:

- One world or many worlds: diversity of multiverse concepts
- "Number & Letter": how to choose the future? Why has the future become technical? Is it possible to change the trajectory?
- Socio-philosophical futurology
- Liberal theory in the XXI century: Identity, trends and prospects
- Moral responsibility: collective, distributed, individual
- Utopia and fiction: the problem of constructing positive images of the future
- Transmedia practices of future awareness

Individual applications for participation in the conference are accepted until July 15, 2023.

All co-authors who plan to participate in the conference must submit an application for participation, but only one of the co-authors (the "main speaker") fills in information about the report (the title of the report, a brief summary of the report (up to 2000 characters), the intended section)

The publication of the collection of abstracts of the conference is not provided, but according to the results of the sections, the heads of the sections can select the best reports for publication in thematic journals.

Participants are not charged any fee. If necessary, the Organizing Committee can assist in the accommodation of participants in the HSE hotel in Moscow.
