School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies and BA program in philosophy are happy to present a series of seminars on seventeenth-century women philosophers Margaret Cavendish and Anne Conway. The five seminars will be held on Saturaday as a part of the research seminar "Non-Canonical Authors and Texts from Early Modern Times to the 19th Century" for philosophy BA students. The seminars are led by Doina-Cristina Rusu, a visiting lecturer at the School of Philosophy and Cultural Studies and a research fellow at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Groningen.
The seminars are going to focus on the peculariteis of Cavendish and Conway's natural philosophy and metaphysics, analyzingw how they were engaged in contemporary discussions regarding the nature of matter; the source of motion and life; the order and regularity of phenomena; the place of humans in the world, etc. Since the positions of these two women philosophers can be labeled as monism and vitalism, special attention will be paid to their critique of dualism and mechanism.
For any questions about possible participation in the seminar, please contact Daria Drozdova (ddrozdova@hse.ru).
